Los Angeles Youth Network Programs

Tonight, over 5,000 kids will seek shelter on our city streets. They come from all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Most are running away from physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse.

The Los Angeles Youth Network was established in 1986 to provide shelter to high-risk homeless kids between the ages of 12 and 17. LAYN helps kids find positive alternatives to living on the streets. Through our case management, specialized services and one-on-one relationships, we offer an environment that is reality-based, honest and consistent.

Here's how we try to help:

Street Outreach | Emergency Shelter | Drop-In Day Center
Stabilization Shelter | Aftercare

Street Outreach

  • Many kids first learn of the LAYN Shelter through our Street Outreach Program. Street Outreach is a word-of-mouth effort communicated by peers and staff. We offer referral cards, HIV reduction kits and an open, non-judgmental ear. Resources for food, shelter and counseling are offered through the Street Outreach Program. We are available during day and night hours.
Emergency Shelter
  • Youth who need basic services such as meals, showers and a safe place to sleep, can enter the Emergency Shelter Program and stay for up to three days. In this program they decide if they want to commit to the requirements of the Stabilization Program, or stay in the Drop-In Program.
Drop-In Day Center
  • The Drop-In Day Center is available for kids who are not ready to commit to a stabilization program. The Center gives them a safe place to be during daytime hours. Meals, clothing, showers and laundry facilities are available in exchange for chore duty or participation in group activities. Counselors are available for talk and help with getting kids off the streets. The Drop-In Day Center is open between 8:30AM to 5PM, seven days a week.
Stabilization Shelter
  • Twenty beds are made available for homeless boys and girls ages 12-17. Stays beyond three days requires parental consent and involvement in an educational and long-term living plan. A successful living plan involves living in a safe, healthy and legal environment which could include family reunification, group or foster homes. The Shelter is open between 5 PM and 8:30 AM, seven days a week.
  • Youth may stay in the Stabilization Program for up to 60 nights, utilizing the Drop-In Center during the day. Youth in this program must pursue an educational plan and choose one of three goals: (1) family reunification, (2) group or foster home placement, or (3) independent living.
Aftercare Services
  • For up to 24 months after youth leave LAYN, they may return for additional counseling, referrals, food, toiletries and emotional support.
